Early election omens for 2024… Donald Trump appeared in court accused of inflating his property valuations to obtain beneficial lending rates from banks. A figure of USD$250 million is being sought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. However, Trump’s ongoing court battles are not damaging his electability in the eyes of his likely voters, with a new poll showing that if an election was called today, he would win against Joe Biden. Whether the Democratic Party is ready, willing, and able to take action to persuade Biden not to run is increasingly being discussed. The polling unpopularity of natural successor VP Kamala Harris only restricts the options available to the Democrats. Although not widely reported in the media, the independent candidacy of Robert Kennedy Jnr. continues to gather steam with support passing 20% according to recent polling. This would make him the most popular independent candidate to ever contest an election, surpassing the 18.91% garnered by Ross Perot in 1992. Democrats are hoping for a repeat of the 1992 outcome when the independent candidate drained support from Republican incumbent President George Bush Snr. and ultimately cost him the election.
