How is this possible?Undoubtedly, the benefits of capitalist liberal democracy have lifted many from poverty, but the rampant, unfettered capitalism and slavish adherence to the myth of the “free market” has led to the scourge of the modern age: inequality. Inequality permeates every aspect of both the American Empire and the modern world. In the American Empire, the pursuit of individual gain above all else has produced an uncaring, combative, zero-sum global ideology. Former President Donald Trump epitomises this worldview, illustrating these traits proudly. Compassion, kindness, and recognition of the need to help others less fortunate than oneself has been demonised as “socialism”. Liberal democracies must stand up to this descent into closed minded cruelty, and show a kinder face to the world. Not by virtue signalling whilst ignoring the need for real change, but instead by showing the world once again that a brighter future for all is possible. A future of collaboration, not contest. A future where helping families fleeing war and poverty is not seen as weak, but strong. It was this American Dream, the promise of a better life for all, that was sold to the world, helping defeat the communist ideology of the Soviet Union. America needs to dream again, because inequality has shown the American dream to now be merely a hollow promise, offering prosperity for the few and hardship for the many.
